Saugus Football Team Off To 2-0 Start

khts_sportsThe Saugus football team is the only team in the Foothill League to win its first two games.

But Golden Valley deserves some props for coming up a two-point conversion short of winning its second game of the season.

Saugus beat Muir, 28-14, at College of the Canyons on Friday night. Saugus quarterback Jared Carbajal and running back Michael Visser each scored two rushing touchdowns. Three Saugus runners combined for 279 yards on the ground.

Visser gained 91 yards on 11 carries. Carbajal rushed for 88 yards on 21 carries. Aaron Kellog led all Saugus rushers with 100 yards on 17 carries.

The Golden Valley football team lost to Royal, 20-19. The Grizzlies scored a fourth-quarter touchdown with 14 seconds left in the game. Instead of kicking an extra point to tie the game, Golden Valley went for two and the win. But Earl Johnson came up short of the goal line and Royal escaped with a one-point victory.

The Valencia football team won its season opener, 49-32, over Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks.

Running back Steven Manfro racked up 324 yards from scrimmage and scored five touchdowns. He had 174 yards rushing on 17 carries and caught five passes for 184 yards. He rushed for three touchdowns and caught two touchdown passes.

The West Ranch football team beat Lancaster, 52-30, to win its first game of the season and even its record at 1-1.

West Ranch quarterback Connor Eichten threw for 361 yards and four touchdowns. He was 17-of-20 passing including two touchdowns to Josh Guzman. He caught seven passes for 201 yards.

The Canyon football team won its season opener, 37-31, over Burroughs. Canyon quarterback Jonathan Jerozal scored the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 3-yard run. Jerozal threw for 272 yards and two touchdowns.

The Hart football team lost to Palmdale, 42-7. Running back Dylan Edwards scored the only touchdown for Hart on a 20-yard run in the second quarter.

The Santa Clarita Christian football team crushed First Lutheran, 52-6, in its season opener. Chris Fechtelkotter scored four touchdowns for Santa Clarita Christian, the reigning CIF Division I 8-man champions. He scored three rushing touchdowns and returned an interception for a touchdown.

The Trinity Classical Academy lost its first varsity football game in school history, 20-16. Freshman quarterback Spencer Klehn threw for 216 yards and two touchdowns for Trinity.

In girls tennis, Valencia won the California High School Tennis Classic Division 2 championship in Clovis over the weekend. The Valencia girls beat Corona Del Mar, 6-0, in the finals of the statewide tournament.

There were 112 schools entered in the two-day tournament. Valencia beat Bakersfield Christian, Oak Ridge, Marin Catholic and San Marin en route to the championship.

The Dodgers lost to the Houston Astros, 7-4. Jay Gibbons hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning for the Dodgers.

The Astros jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Hunter Pence hit a two-run homer off Dodgers starter Carlos Monasterios in the first inning. Carlos Lee added a solo home run for the Astros in the eighth inning.

The Dodgers won two games in a row in their weekend series with the Astros, but have lost seven of their past nine games.

The Dodgers have the day off today. They start a three-game series against the Giants in San Francisco on Tuesday.
