Canyon Football Team Wins Season Opener
The Canyon football team won its season opener, 37-31, over Burroughs at Canyon High School on Saturday.
Canyon quarterback Jonathan Jerozal scored on a 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to give his team the lead. Jerozal threw for 272 yards and two touchdowns. He was 17-of-22 passing with one interception.
It was the second loss in a row for Burroughs to a Foothill League team. Burroughs lost to Saugus, 26-20, last Friday night in the season opener for both teams.
The Santa Clarita Christian football team beat First Lutheran, 52-6, at Valencia High School.
Santa Clarita Christian’s Chris Fechtelkotter scored four touchdowns. He caught three touchdown passes and returned an interception for a touchdown.
Trinity Classical Academy played its first varsity football game and lost to Calvary Baptist, 20-16, at Faith Lutheran High School.
Trinity had a 16-14 lead in the fourth quarter. Josh Waschak and James Brooks each caught touchdown passes.
Calvary Baptist scored the winning touchdown on a 70-yard kick-off return with about five minutes to play in the game.
The College of the Canyons football team lost to Mt. San Antonio College, 34-19, in Walnut.
COC took a 19-14 lead in the third quarter, but Mt. SAC, the reigning state champions, scored 20 unanswered points to win the game.
COC quarterback Justin Arias hit receiver Cameron Bailey with a 34-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter for a 19-14 lead.
Bryce McBride gave Mt. SAC, the top-ranked team in the state, a 20-19 lead with a 26-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
COC (1-1) will host Citrus College in its home opener next Saturday.
