CHP Volunteers Raise Money For Acton Family

khts_givingbackNearly $12,000 was raised and more donations are coming in after the California Highway Patrol Antelope Valley Area held a fund-raising car wash for the Darnell Family, who lost their mother and one of the children in a tragic accident August 30.

On Monday, August 30th, 2010, Missy Darnell and her two daughters, Genevieve and Olivia, were walking on Antelope Woods when they were struck by a Scion being driven by a 22-year-old female. Olivia was uninjured but Missy and Genevieve succumbed to their injuries. This tragic event left the four surviving children to fend for themselves. They had lost their father, Kirk, back in December from an apparent heart attack.

On September 4, the CHP held a car wash, staffed by off-duty officers and their families, CHP volunteers, Explorers from the Newhall CHP office and business and community members. Local businesses in the Antelope Valley assisted in the fund raiser. Unocal

76 provided towels, soap, and buckets. Grace Resources supplied sodas and iced tea for the volunteers. Anheuser-Busch supplied water. McDonald's in Acton hosted the car wash in their parking lot.

The six-and-a-half-hour-long car wash raised $11,143.75 for the Darnell family. Some sealed envelopes with unknown amounts of money were also dropped off at the event.

Antelope Valley Area Commander Captain Todd Hoose will be presenting the proceeds to the Darnell children at the AV CHP office on West Avenue I in Lancaster.
