Valencia, Canyon Football Teams In CIF Northern Division Top 10

khts_sportsTwo teams from the Foothill League are in the CIF Southern Section Northern Division top 10 preseason poll. Valencia, the reigning Foothill League champion, is No. 3 and Canyon is ranked 10th.

Westlake, the Northern Division champions from the Marmonte League, was the top-ranked team in the poll. St. Bonaventure from Ventura, one of the newest members of the Marmonte League, was ranked No. 2.

 

Valencia opens against Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks on Sept. 10. Canyon has its first game against Burroughs on Sept. 11.

The Master’s College men’s soccer team, the second-ranked team in the NAIA, is seeking its first win of the season.

The Master’s College, 0-1-1 after two games, will play Cal State San Marcos today.

The Master’s College is coming off a 1-1 tie against St. Benedictine of Kansas, the 10th ranked team in the NAIA, in Salt Lake City.

Joel Peluffo scored a goal in the eighth minute to tie the game. The two teams played two overtimes, but couldn’t break the tie.

The high school girls golf season opened with Hart winning its first match of the season.

The Hart girls beat La Reina, 211-225, at the Rustic Canyon Golf Course in Moorpark.

Nikki Prichard and Jamie Corr each shot 38s to lead Hart against La Reina. Brenna Carlson shot a 41 and Amanda Corr shot 42.

Hart faces West Ranch today at the Woodley Lakes Golf Course in Van Nuys.

The West Ranch girls will be looking for their first win of the season. They lost their season opening match to Thousand Oaks, 212-263. West Ranch’s Sara Hong shot a team-best 49 and Michelle Kim shot 51 against Thousand Oaks.

The Valencia girls team lost to Dos Pueblos, 229-238, at the TPC at Valencia. Valencia sophomore Alison Lee earned medalist honors shooting an even-par 36 in the nine-hole match. Teammate Allie Jin came in with an 11-over par 47.

Valencia plays La Reina at Rustic Canyon on Thursday.

In women’s college golf, the College of the Canyons team won the first Western State Conference match of the season. The COC women shot 329, four strokes better than Santa Barbara. Bakersfield was third at 342.

Candace Robledo paced COC with an 8-over, 80. Brittany Suarez was 10-over at 82 for COC.

The Dodgers made it interesting, but lost to the Phillies, 8-4. James Loney hit a two-run home run that cut the Phillies lead to two runs in the sixth inning.

But a pair of Phillies’ three-run home runs was too much for the Dodgers to overcome.

Ryan Howard and Brian Schneider each hit three-run homers to give the Phillies a 6-1 lead.

The Dodgers and Phillies wrap up their three-game series today at Dodger Stadium. It will be Clayton Kershaw for the Dodgers against Roy Oswalt for the Phillies. Pregame starts at 11:30 this morning on AM 1220, KHTS.
