Community Heroes To Be Honored At Red Cross Event

american_red_crossHeroes are not just in comic books; they live in our community.  On September 11, the Santa Clarita Valley Red Cross will honor individuals who have displayed heroic or humanitarian actions in our community at the Hometown Hero Award Brunch which will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Santa Clarita Activities Center.

Eleven categories of heroes will be honored: Medical Hero, Youth Hero (through 17), Military Hero, Adult Hero (18-59), Educator Hero, Workplace Hero, Senior Hero (60+), First Responder Hero, Corporate Hero, Youth Sports Hero, Mentor Hero, and Animal Hero

Since June 2009, the Santa Clarita Valley Red Cross has been accepting nominations from community members for this event.  The nomination criteria include prevention of loss of life or property, community impact, leadership or mentoring, and making a lasting impact.

“What I really like is that [this event] tells people a little specific stuff about local people who have done heroic acts which otherwise might go overlooked.  It brings it to their attention and hopefully encourages other people to get involved and help out people.” said Lt. Mark Hershey, Chair of the Santa Clarita Valley Red Cross.

This year, 19 heroes have been nominated, including an animal hero.

Former CBS 2 and KCAL 9 news anchor Rick Chambers will be the Master of Ceremonies.  Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley will be the guest speaker.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will go towards buying cots, medical supplies, water, and supplies for disaster relief containers located at schools in the SCV.

Tickets cost $50 and sponsorship opportunities are available.

The Santa Clarita Activities Center is located at 20800 Centre Pointe Pkwy.,  Santa Clarita.

The Hometown Hero Award event, started in 2004, was modeled after similar Hometown Hero programs sponsored by the Red Cross.  Carl Goldman, one of the founders of the event, said that there are three important aspects to the program.  First, the event is always held on September 11 to honor local and national heroes.  Second, it provides an opportunity to honor people in the community whose actions may be overlooked.  Third, it raises money that funds local Red Cross services.
