Hart PONY Mustang Team Prepares For National Youth Baseball Championships

khts_sportsThere used to be a time when winning the PONY World Series was the end of the line for youth baseball players.

Not anymore. The Hart Mustang baseball team, fresh off winning the PONY World Series in Irving, Texas, will move on to the National Youth Baseball Championships.

Teams from eight youth baseball organizations across the country will compete for a national championship beginning on Aug. 27 in Memphis, Tenn. The Hart PONY Mustang team will play the Tomateros de California from the United States Specialty Sports Association in their first game of pool play.

Teams from AAU, Babe Ruth, Dixie Youth Baseball, National Amateur Baseball Association and the Super Series are playing in the National Youth Baseball Championships, which will be televised on the Major League Baseball Network.

In softball, the U.S. Junior National team won the gold-medal game of the 18-and-under Pan-American Championships, 3-1, over Canada in Colombia.

Valencia High graduate Madison Shipman was 1-for-2 with a stolen base in the championship game. The U.S. Junior National team won its third Pan-American championship and its first since 2006.

Shipman has been a significant contributor to the U.S. Junior National team which went 9-0 in the Pan-American Championships. She hit .421 and drove in seven runs in nine games. The United States beat Puerto Rico, 6-1, in the semifinals to reach the gold-medal game.

In auto racing, Canyon High graduate Greg Pursley finished fourth in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at Colorado National Speedway on Saturday night.

Eric Holmes won the race, his second in a row and his fourth of the season. Holmes leads the West Series standings with three races remaining.

The next West Series race is at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah on Sept. 12.


In golf, Martin Kaymer of Germany won the PGA Championship in a playoff at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.

Kaymer beat Bubba Watson in a three-hole playoff to win the first major of his career.

Tiger Woods shot a 1-over par 73 in the final round of the PGA Championship and finished in a tie for 28th place.

The Dodgers were clobbered by the Atlanta Braves, 13-1, and dropped 10 games out of first place in the National League West standings.

Matt Kemp scored the lone run for the Dodgers in the seventh inning. Vicente Padilla was roughed up for eight runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Alex Gonzalez and Troy Glaus each drove in four runs for the Braves.

The Dodgers and Braves conclude their four-game series today. It will be Chad Billingsley for the Dodgers against Tommy Hanson for the Braves.
