COC Football Team No. 17 In State Poll

khts_sportsThe College of the Canyons football team is ranked No. 17 in the California Community College Football Coaches Association preseason poll.

Mt. San Antonio College, the reigning state champions, is ranked No. 1 in the state. The City College of San Francisco was ranked second, followed by San Mateo, Fullerton and Palomar.

College of the Canyons was ranked No. 11 in the Southern California poll. Pierce College came in at No. 14.

College of the Canyons opens the football season on the road against Antelope Valley, the No. 17 team in Southern California, on Sept. 4.

In softball, Valencia High graduate Madison Shipman had a huge game for the U.S. Junior National team against Mexico. Shipman, who started in left field, went 3-for-4 with double and drove in two runs in her team’s 15-3 win in the 18-and-under Pan-American Championships in Colombia. Shipman also scored two runs and stole a base.

She continued her hot hitting in a 7-0 win over Brazil. Shipman doubled, scored two runs and drove in one. She had an RBI groundout in the United States 3-0 win over Canada.

Shipman has played in left field, first base and shortstop in her team’s first six games. The United States finished pool play undefeated at 6-0 in the Pan-American Championships.

The Lakers signed Devin Ebanks, their second-round pick in the NBA draft, to a rookie-minimum contract if he makes the team, according to the LA Times.

Ebanks, the 43rd overall pick out of West Virginia, averaged 11.2 points and 7.9 rebounds per game in two seasons in college.

In golf, Tiger Woods shot a 1-under 71 in the opening round of the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin and was three shots off the lead.

Bubba Watson and Francesco Molinari each shot 4-under par 68s to share the lead after the first round of the PGA Championship, which was delayed because of fog. Three other players were at 4-under par when play was suspended because of darkness.

Woods started his round with three birdies on the first four holes, but had to birdie the 18th hole to finish at 1-under.

The Dodgers blew a seven-run lead and lost another heartbreaker to the Philadelphia Phillies, 10-9. Leading 9-2 in the eighth inning, the Dodgers coughed up eight painful runs in the final two innings of the game.

Ronald Belisario was charged with four runs in the eighth inning. Closer Jonathan Broxton gave up four more runs in the ninth inning without recording an out.

The Dodgers were cruising and looked like they were going to keep pace with the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants. Both National League West rivals won their games earlier in the day.

But the Dodgers let a big one slip away. Matt Kemp was instrumental in helping the Dodgers build a 9-2 lead with a two-run home run in the seventh inning.

But Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz drove in the winning run with a two-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Dodgers start a four-game series with the Atlanta Braves tonight. It will be Hiroki Kuroda for the Dodgers against Tim Hudson for the Braves. Pregame starts at 3:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.
