West Ranch Beats Alemany To Reach Semifinals Of Valley Invitational Baseball League Playoffs

khts_sportsWest Ranch scored three runs in the sixth inning and beat Alemany, 5-4, to advance to the semifinals of the Valley Invitational Baseball League playoffs.

Justin Hovis drove in two runs and Ryan Riordan was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and scored a run.

Steven Farnworth pitched three shutout innings in relief to end the game. He struck out five and gave up only two hits.

Valencia lost to El Camino Real, 4-0, in the quarterfinals. Valencia was held to three hits in the game and two El Camino Real pitchers combined for nine strikeouts.

AJ Balta, Trey Williams and Shane Zeile got the only hits for Valencia, all singles.

Moorpark beat Taft, 6-4, to reach the semifinals of the summer league playoffs.

West Ranch will play Chatsworth in one semifinal game. Chatsworth beat Chaminade, 3-0.

El Camino Real will play Moorpark on Wednesday in the other semifinal.

Nick Korth, swimming for Canyons Aquatics Club, finished fourth in the 100 meter breaststroke on the final day of the California-Nevada Sectionals of the Speedo Championship Series at the Santa Clarita Aquatics Center. Takeshi Yamada from the Trojan Swim Club won the race.

The Canyons Aquatics Club men’s team finished sixth in the meet. The Mission Viejo Nadadores won the men’s portion of the meet.

Michelle Duraj from Canyons Aquatic Club was fifth in the 100 meter breaststroke at the meet. Lilian Alvarez from the Marin Pirates Swim Team won the race.

The Canyons Aquatics Club women’s team was sixth in the meet. The AquaZot Swim Club won the women’s portion of the swim sectionals.

The Dodgers begin a three-game series with the San Diego Padres tonight. The Padres lead the National League West standings by three games over the San Franisco Giants. The Dodgers are in third place in the National League West standings, six games out of first.

Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw will begin his five-game suspension today meaning he will miss his scheduled start against the Giants this weekend. Kershaw was suspended after hitting Giants centerfielder Aaron Rowand with a pitch in a game last week. Dodger manager Joe Torre and bench coach Bob Schaefer were also ejected from the game and given one-game suspensions.

Before the Dodgers play the Giants, they have the first-place Padres to deal with.

The Dodgers will send Chad Billingsley to the mound to start against Jon Garland for the Padres.

After losing six games in a row after the All-Star break, the Dodgers have been on a bit of a roll. They have won four of their past five games. Three of those wins were shutouts.

The Padres meanwhile have won three in a row and are 7-2 since the All-Star break.
