COC Un-Job Fair A Success
The Career Center at College of the Canyons recently hosted CareerCampSCV for more than 100 people at the Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center.
The day included speakers, ad hoc presentations and breakout sessions on all aspects of building a great career. CareerCampSCV was free for all adults who wanted to build or improve their career.
Santa Clarita Mayor Laurene Weste proclaimed July 10th as CareerCampSCV Day in honor the “unconference” to help many local people come together and get the career they want and deserve.
Event co-chair Douglas E. Welch took the “unconference” idea from the high tech world and initiated CareerCampLA in Northridge earlier this year.

“We need to take an active part in our lives. Organizing an event where the attendees control the day is very uplifting. Using free online tools to organize and produce an event validates the importance of new media going forward” said Welch.
Attendee Kevin R. Panet said, “Thank you for an awesome day. It was very well organized and I was very impressed with how many people showed up and the feelings of optimism, helpfulness and excitement for the future.”
“The mission of the University Center was served perfectly through reaching out to community members who see a four year or post graduate degree program as a part of their future career plans” said event co-chair Anthony Michaelides, Career Services and Job Placement Director at COC.
CareerCampSCV organizers have already received requests from other communities in California and around the country to put CareerCamps on in their locales. A formal entity is being organized to make that a reality. CareerCampInternational will be available to train and mentor those who wish to put on a CareerCamp “unconference” for their community.
The University Center is located at 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road, Santa Clarita and is a part of College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita (http://www.canyons.edu).
