Santa Clarita Blue Heat End Soccer Season With A Draw
The Santa Clarita Blue Heat ended their inaugural soccer season with a 1-1 tie against the Colorado Rush at Valencia High School.
Yvonne Northover gave the Blue Heat a 1-0 lead scoring on a penalty kick in the 58th minute.
The Rush tied the game on a penalty kick in the 68th minute.
Goalkeepers Kira Lazenby and Erin Frushon combined to make seven saves for the Blue Heat. Frushon started the game. Lazenby replaced her in the second half.
The Blue Heat ends their first season in the United Soccer League W-League Western Conference with a 2-6-2 record.
Three high school golfers from the Santa Clarita Valley have qualified for the USGA Junior Amateur Championship at Egypt Valley Country Club in Michigan.
West Ranch’s JJ Holen and CJ Espino and Valencia’s Daniel Lee are scheduled to tee off in the Junior Amateur Championship on Monday.
The tournament is a combination of stroke and match play. Stroke play begins on Monday. If the golfers make the cut, they will begin match play on Wednesday to determine the champion.
In auto racing, Bryan Herta Autosport is preparing for Sunday’s Firestone Indy Lights race in Toronto with an extreme amount of confidence.
Sebastian Saavedra, one of two drivers for Bryan Herta Autosport, won the pole and the Indy Lights race in Toronto last year. He is coming off a third-place finish at Watkins Glen International and won the race at Iowa Speedway last month.
Saavedra has moved up to third place in the Indy Lights standings. He is 47 points behind JK Vernay, the leader in the Indy Lights standings.
Stefan Wilson, the other driver for Bryan Herta Autosport, was fourth in last year’s Indy Lights race in Toronto.
Valencia’s Bryan Herta, the co-owner of the team, won the Indy Lights race in Toronto as a driver in 1993.
In the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West, Canyon High graduate Greg Pursley heads to Portland International Raceway with a much-needed confidence boost.
Pursley’s team has struggled in West Series races, but his Gene Price Motorsports team is coming off a eighth-place finish in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Iowa Speedway.
In his last West Series race, Pursley won the pole at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale and led the first 42 laps of the race, but got a flat tire and hit the backstretch wall.
Pursley was the runner-up in the West Series race in Portland last year. He led eight of the last nine laps of the race, but was passed by Jim Inglebright on the last lap.
The Dodgers started the second half of the season on a losing note in St. Louis.
The Cardinals beat the Dodgers, 7-1, behind eight strong innings from St. Louis starter Chris Carpenter. He gave up only four hits and improved to 6-0 lifetime against the Dodgers
Andre Ethier homered and singled for the Dodgers. Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw lasted only 4 1/3 innings. He gave up four earned runs and was hit in the leg off a liner from Adam Miles in the second inning.
