Secondhand Dealer Compliance Sweep Results In Two Citations
More than a dozen deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station conducted a secondhand dealer compliance assurance operation throughout Santa Clarita Wednesday. Teams of undercover deputies visited several businesses who deal in the purchasing and reselling of second hand items such as gold, jewelry, and video games.
Secondhand dealers are required by law to request identification and complete the appropriate paperwork to document each purchase. Copies of those documents are then to be forwarded to local law enforcement to ensure the goods being purchased and resold were not obtained illegally or taken in residential burglaries or thefts in the Santa Clarita Valley or surrounding areas.
Deputies will issue a warning to the businesses and inform them of the reporting requirements prior to issuing citations. In today's operation, 21 businesses were checked. Two businesses were found to be in violation of the reporting requirements after they failed to ask the undercover deputies for the identification or fill out required paperwork. The two businesses had already been issued warnings in previous compliance operations conducted by the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station. They were each issued citations and have future court dates pending. Many of the other 19 businesses were also found to be out of compliance. They were issued warnings and information about required documentation and compliance procedures.
Detectives conduct these types of operations several times a year in a proactive effort to prevent the easy fencing of stolen property in our community. Their goal is to ensure goods being bought or resold at these businesses were not taken during incidents of burglary or theft. Detectives also use the documentation provided by the secondhand dealers to determine if the property is stolen, go after the offender, and return the property to its rightful owner. These businesses are the first line of defense when it comes to preventing the illegal sale of stolen items in our community. By stopping this activity, the Sheriff’s Department can also have a direct impact on those who sell stolen items and use the money obtained to purchase illegal drugs.
Education is the key and officials from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station would like to remind the public that if they sell any goods to a secondhand dealer in Santa Clarita, that business should be requesting identification, completing a secondhand dealer pawn ticket, and providing a copy of the paperwork to the seller. The seller should be wary of any transaction with a secondhand dealer that does not require the appropriate information and documentation.
