Hart High Grad Trevor Bauer Gets Start For UCLA In College World Series

khts_sportsHart High graduate Trevor Bauer will get the start for UCLA in its first game of the College World Series on Saturday.

Bauer, a sophomore at UCLA, is 10-3 with a 3.02 ERA in 16 starts. He leads the Pac-10 with 141 strikeouts and has the third most strikeouts in a single season for UCLA.

He goes up against Florida, the third-seeded team in the College World Series. Florida will send Alex Panteliodis to the mound.

In auto racing, Canyon High graduate Greg Purlsey will be in action in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West on Saturday. He is racing at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma and is in third place in the West Series standings.

Bryan Herta Autosport, and its two-car team, will be at Iowa Speedway for a Firestone Indy Lights race. Sebastian Saavedra enters the race in fifth place in the Indy Lights standings. Teammate Justin Wilson is in sixth place, five points behind Saavedra. Bryan Herta Autosport is owned in part by Valencia's Bryan Herta, a Hart High graduate.

Go to Haddock in the Paddock for updates from the West Series race in Sonoma and highlights from the Indy Lights race at Iowa Speedway.

In the Valley Invitational Baseball League, Saugus beat St. Francis, 5-3, scoring two runs in the top of the sixth to break a 3-3 tie. Justin Sheehan was 4-for-4 and drove in a run for Saugus. Teammate Dylan Freyre drove in two runs.

The Pac-10 added a 12th team. Utah will join the Pac-10 in 2011. Colorado will also be part of the Pac-10 starting in 2011, giving the conference 12 teams.

The Lakers won the NBA championship, 83-79, over the Boston Celtics in a deciding Game 7 at Staples Center.

Kobe Bryant scored 23 points and was the NBA Finals MVP. But this was a team effort for the Lakers. Derek Fisher hit two big 3-pointers. Pau Gasol pulled down 18 tough rebounds. Sasha Vujacic hit a pair of clutch free throws in the fourth quarter.

Lakers coach Phil Jackson said Ron Artest was the MVP of Game 7. He scored 20 points and hit two 3-pointers, but it was his defensive presence that made the difference. He played a big part in Paul Pierce’s 5-for-15 shooting night from the field.

It was the second straight NBA championship for the Lakers and the 16th in franchise history.

It was Bryant’s fifth NBA championship, tying him with Magic Johnson and Derek Fisher for the most in Lakers history.

It was the 11th NBA championship for Jackson as a coach.

But probably the most important stat of all, it was the first time the Lakers beat the Celtics in a Game 7 of the NBA Finals. The Celtics had won the previous four.

The Dodgers lost to the Cincinnati Reds, 7-1, as Dodgers starter John Ely was tagged for seven runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Blake DeWitt collected two hits as the leadoff hitter in place of Rafael Furcal. Furcal is expected to miss a week and was placed on the bereavement list to visit a sick family member in the Dominican Republic.

Casey Blake was 3-for-4 and Ely drove in the Dodgers only run with a single in the second inning.

The Dodgers move on to Boston to start a weekend series with the Red Sox. Carlos Monasterios will start for the Dodgers against Felix Doubront for the Red Sox. Pregame starts at 3:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.
