Dodgers Select COC's Cal Vogelsang In Major League Baseball Draft
Two more players from the Santa Clarita Valley were selected on the third and final day of the Major League Baseball draft. Matt Valaika, a Hart High graduate and senior at UC Santa Barbara, and Cal Vogelsang from College of Canyons were taken late in the draft.
The St. Louis Cardinals selected Valaika in the 34th round. Valaika hit .301 with four home runs and 35 RBIs in his senior season at UC Santa Barbara.
The Dodgers selected College of the Canyons outfielder Cal Vogelsang in the 37th round of the draft. Vogelsang, a West Ranch High grad, hit .380 at COC and led the team with 11 home runs and 35 runs batted in.
Valencia High graduate and UC Riverside senior Michael Hur was picked by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 20th round on the second day of the draft.
Casey Stevenson, a Saugus High grad and senior at UC Irvine, was selected in the 25th round by the New York Yankees.
Joe Zeller, a pitcher for The Master’s College, was taken in the 28th round by the Chicago Cubs.
In the NHL Stanley Cup Finals, the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Philadelphia Flyers, 4-3 in overtime, and won its first Stanley Cup in 49 years.
The Blackhawks won the series, four games to two. Patrick Kane scored the game-winner for the Blackhawks four minutes into the first overtime period.
The USC football team is going to be banned from bowl games for two years as part of NCAA sanctions that will be announced today according to various media reports. ESPN and the LA Times are reporting that the USC football program with lose scholarships and be stripped of 13 wins during the 2004 season.
The NCAA is expected to release the findings today of its investigation into possible rule violations by the USC football and men’s basketball teams.
The Lakers are sitting pretty in the NBA Finals, thanks mostly to the play of Derek Fisher. He is coming off an inspiring 16-point performance in Game 3 of the Finals against the Boston Celtics. Fisher scored 11 points in the fourth quarter and led his team to a must win over the Celtics on their homecourt.
The Lakers can take a commanding three games to one lead in the NBA Finals tonight. Game 4 is set to tipoff at 6 p.m.
The Dodgers completed the sweep of the visiting St. Louis Cardinals with a 4-3 win and have a one-game lead in the National League West standings.
Manny Ramirez hit a two-run home run in the first inning and James Loney went 4-for-4 and scored a run for the Dodgers.
The Dodgers will begin a weekend series with the Angels on Friday night.
