Valencia, Hart Softball Teams Move On In CIF Playoffs
The Valencia and Hart softball teams made easy work of their second-round playoff opponents and will move on to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs.
Valencia’s Carly Mortensen gave up only two hits in a 10-1 win over Valencia of Placentia. Hart scored five runs in the fifth inning en route to an 8-3 win over Rosary of Fullerton.
The Valencia softball team collected 14 hits. Madison Shipman had three hits, scored three runs and drove in one. Teammate Tori Balta was 3-for-3 with three doubles, two RBIs and scored two runs. Lauren Boser added a two-run double in a four-run second inning.
Mortensen struck out 10 and walked only one in her complete game victory.
Valencia will play Orange Lutheran on Thursday.
Hart was down 3-2 against Rosary when the Indians exploded for five runs in the fifth inning. Blake Lewis provided the punch with a two-run double in the inning. Juli Strange and Caitlyn Zimmerman each drove in a run in the fifth.
Hart starter Emili Escamilla settled down after giving up three runs in the first two innings. She pitched five shutout innings and ended the game with four strikeouts.
Hart will play Corona in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
The Lakers lost to the Phoenix Suns, 115-106, in Game 4 of the NBA Western Conference Finals.
Suns guard Steve Nash had 15 points and eight assists, but it was the Suns bench that made the difference. Channing Frye hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points. The Suns bench players outscored the Lakers bench, 54-20.
Kobe Bryant had a game-high 38 points and 10 assists. Lamar Odom added 15 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, but he was the lone bright spot from the reserves.
The series is tied at two games apiece. Game 5 is Thursday at Staples Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 6.
The Dodgers started their six-game roadie with a 3-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs.
Cubs starter Ryan Dempster pitched eight shutout innings and gave up only three hits. Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw was almost as effective, giving up only four hits in six innings.
Derek Lee drove in a run in the sixth inning to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead. He hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning and knocked in all three of the Cubs’ runs.
The Dodgers face the Cubs again tonight at Wrigley Field. It will be Chad Billingsley for the Dodgers against Tom Gorzelanny for the Cubs. Pregame starts at 4:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.
