Valencia Boys Volleyball Team Reaches CIF Quarterfinals

khts_sportsThe Valencia boys volleyball team are cruising in the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs. Behind 15 kills from Eric Ensing, Valencia swept Villa Park in three games to advance to the quarterfinals.

But it wasn’t all good news for Valencia. Outside hitter Daniel Johnson is nursing a sprained ankle and might not play in Saturday’s match against Claremont, the Pacific League champs.

Nick Ferry stepped up in Johnson’s place against Villa Park and recorded 10 kills and had nine digs.

Valencia setter Steven Crane recorded 31 assists in the match against Villa Park.

The Golden Valley boys volleyball team saw its season come to an end in a three-game sweep against Laguna Beach in the second round of the Division II playoffs.

Golden Valley was making its first appearance in the CIF playoffs and won its first match in the first round. With homecourt advantage, Golden Valley was overmatched against Laguna Beach, the top seed in the Division II playoffs and the champions of the Orange Coast League.

Alec Schlossman had a team-high six kills for Golden Valley. Teammate Ryan Holcombe had six digs.

The Foothill League softball teams are jockeying for position in the CIF playoffs. Hart moved into second place in league with a 10-0 win over West Ranch. Emili Escamilla tossed a three-hit shutout and Jessica Jones homered for Hart. Jones went 3-for-3.

West Ranch falls to third place in league behind Hart and Valencia, the Foothill League champs.

Saugus made a strong statement for an at-large bid with an 11-0 win over Golden Valley. Saugus is the fourth-place team in league, but has a 17-12 record. The top three teams in the Foothill League are guaranteed spots in the playoffs.

Ashley Butera was 3-for-4 with a double and drove in a run against Golden Valley. Sara Shier had two hits and drove in two runs.

The Valencia softball team capped its season with a 9-0 shutout against Canyon. Carly Mortensen recorded her ninth shutout of the season, a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts.

Valencia wrapped up a perfect 9-0 Foothill League season. Mortensen is 19-1 and had three shutouts against league opponents.

Bethany Kemp drove in three runs and was 1-for-3 with a triple against Canyon. Madison Shipman went 3-for-3 with an RBI.

The West Ranch boys golf team shot 400 and finished in 18th place in the CIF Southern Section final at Redhawk Golf Club in Temecula.

Luis Garcia shot a 5-over par 77 to lead West Ranch. J.J. Holen and C.J. Espino each shot 7-over par 79s.


Clayton Thatch, Garcia, Holen and Espino will play in the CIF Individual Regional at River Ridge Golf Course in Oxnard on Monday.

Servite of Anaheim won the Southern Section final with a team score of 365.

The Dodgers are in San Diego to face the first-place Padres tonight. The Dodgers are in the midst of a four-game winning and are at .500 for the first time since April 21.
