Valencia Baseball Team Survives Saugus Comeback

The Valencia baseball team nearly blew a 10-run lead and scored seven runs in the sixth inning to secure a 19-12 win over Saugus. Brian Mundell hit a grand slam in the sixth inning for Valencia, but not before Saugus rallied after being down 12-2.

Saugus scored nine runs in the fifth inning to cut the lead to one. Justin Sheehan hit a two-run homer to spark the comeback.

The West Ranch baseball team jumped out to a 4-0 lead and beat Hart, 10-7. Dakota Hernandez drove in three runs with a double in the first inning for West Ranch. Teammate Josh Heinz went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two doubles.

Hart’s Nolan Simons was 3-for-5 and drove in two runs.

The Canyon baseball team scored four runs in the sixth inning and beat Golden Valley, 7-5. Adam Evans drove in the winning run for Canyon with a two-run double in the sixth. Thomas Kratky drove in two runs and was 1-for-4 with a triple.

Golden Valley put up four runs in its half of the sixth inning, but fell short of completing the comeback. Anthony San Miguel hit a three-run home run and Brandon Smith was 2-for-3 with a double and scored two runs for Golden Valley.

Valencia has a one-game lead over West Ranch in the Foothill League standings with two games to play. Saugus and Golden Valley are tied for third with 6-7 league records.

In high school golf, the West Ranch, Valencia and Saugus boys teams are in the CIF Northern Divisional at the Soule Park Golf Course in Ojai today. The shotgun start begins at noon.

In high school track and field, Saugus sprinter Jenna Vincej set a school record and was on a relay team that set a meet record in the Foothill League finals last week. She won the 400 in 55.80 seconds, besting her own school record in the race. She was also on the 4x400 relay team with Amber Wright, Nicole Penick and Alex Hampton that set the meet record in 3 minutes, 55.36 seconds.

Golden Valley distance runner Seth Totten won the league championship in the 3,200 dominating the race in 9 minutes, 20.96 seconds. He won the race by nearly 11 seconds over Robert Pion of Saugus.

Canyon won 14 championships in the league finals. Tiffini Stone repeated as league champ in the long jump and triple while teammate Taylor Thomas won the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles for the second year in a row for Canyon.

In auto racing, Mark Borchetta of Valencia finished third in the Legends Cars race at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale on Saturday night. It was his third straight top-five finish.

Brent Scheidemantle of Alta Loma won the Legends Cars race.

The Lakers are up 3-0 against the Utah Jazz in the NBA Western Conference playoffs and can complete the sweep tonight. The Lakers beat the Jazz, 111-110, on Saturday night behind 35 points from Kobe Bryant.

Game 4 is tonight in Utah.

The Dodgers got eight shutout innings from starter Clayton Kershaw in a 2-0 win over the Colorado Rockies. Kershaw struck out nine and gave up only two hits.

Russell Martin hit a solo home run in the eighth inning to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead.

The Dodgers are in Arizona tonight to start a three-game series against the Diamondbacks. It will be Chad Billingsley for the Dodgers against Rodrigo Lopez for the Diamondbacks. Pregame starts at 6 on AM 1220, KHTS.
