A Midsummer Night’s Dream To Be Performed By COC Theatre Department
This May, community members will have the opportunity to kick off the summer in traditional Shakespearean style, as the College of the Canyons theatre department presents the production "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center (PAC) at College of the Canyons.
"'A Midsummer Night's Dream' is a feast for the eyes and the ears. This is one of Shakespeare's most accessible plays, and our interpretation will be appropriate for all ages," said Paul Wickline, chair of the college's theatre department. "Our production has it all - romance, comedy, swordplay, magic, and Shakespeare's marvelous language. Come enjoy the magic."
The performance will run at 8 p.m. Friday, May 21, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, May 22, and at 2 p.m. Sunday May 23.
Featuring a plotline resembling a modern day soap opera or reality dating show, along with a cast of some of Shakespeare's most popular characters, "A Midsummer Night's Dream" has been hailed for centuries as one of the world's greatest romantic comedies.
When lovers cross with mischievous sprites in a magical forest with a blend of mortals, mechanicals and faeries, nothing is how it appears.
"I've thoroughly enjoyed watching this mostly young group of actors challenge themselves with the verbal and physical demands of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream,'" says Stephen Whelan, director of the production. "As a theatre person living and working in the Santa Clarita Valley for the past 10 years, I believe that, yes, young American actors can do Shakespeare and make the language, characters, and overall humor come alive for modern audiences."
The College of the Canyons theatre department's production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is part of the college's ongoing 40th Anniversary celebration.
All performances will be held on the PAC main stage. General admission is $10 or $5 for COC students and seniors.
