Parent/Student Seminar Offers Trends in Drug Abuse Information
Abuse of over-the-counter drugs and marijuana are among the topics to be covered when the Wm. S. Hart High School District hosts a district-wide drug awareness seminar for parents and students from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. May 4 in the West Ranch High School theater.
The seminar is part of a series of drug information seminars offered by the Hart District's Comprehensive Alcohol and Drug Reduction Education (CADRE) program and is open to the local community.
Sergeant Tom Lorenz from the Glendale Police Department will be the keynote speaker. He will offer information regarding drug and alcohol use and abuse by school age children in the local community. The May 4 seminar will focus on current trends in drug abuse such as getting high on over-the-counter (OTC) drugs and the use of marijuana.
The seminar will address the latest phenomenon in substance abuse and addiction. The abuse of over-the-counter drugs is a growing local problem since OTC drugs are cheap and widely available methods for getting high. OTC drugs are particularly abused by adolescents and young adults.
Parents and students who attend the seminar will learn about OTC drug pharmacology and will become familiar with ways in which the drug is used. There will also be a segment in marijuana and the myths of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC).
There will also be a presentation on the Hart District's CADRE program and an opportunity to enroll students in the district's voluntary random drug testing program. Handout materials will be provided by the MEDTOX DAR program, which conducts the district's drug testing.
The evening program is for students, parents, family, neighbors and friends. It is an educational program to offer an insight into what students have been exposed to in the way of illegal drugs.
"We look forward to seeing Santa Clarita parents and students at this important event," concluded Darryl Adams, coordinator of the district's CADRE program. "We are encouraging all schools in the Santa Clarita Valley to participate."
Students who attend will be entered into a drawing for free Magic Mountain tickets to be held that evening. West Ranch High School is located at 26255 Valencia Blvd. in Stevenson Ranch.
