Valencia Softball Team Wins Michelle Carew Classic

khts_sportsThe Valencia softball team won the Michelle Carew Classic, beating Norco, 4-0, in the championship game.

Sophomore Carly Mortensen pitched a three-hitter against Norco, but it paled in comparison to her previous two games.

Mortensen was channeling Johnny Vander Meer pitching two consecutive no-hitters in the quarterfinal and semifinal games of the Michelle Carew Classic. For those wondering, Vander Meer is the only pitcher to throw back-to-back no-hitters in the major leagues.

Mortensen compiled 52 strikeouts in five games of the tournament. In the championship game, she struck out nine and walked two.

Madison Shipman was 3-for-5 and drove in three runs against Norco. She scored her team's first run in the first inning and drove in two more with a single in the second inning.

The Hart softball team beat Lakewood, 4-2, in the consolation championship game of the Michelle Carew Classic. Tracy Chandless and Lauren Anderson each drove in a run for Hart. Emili Escamilla pitched a complete game with five strikeouts for Hart.

The Saugus softball team beat Torrance, 5-4, in the Santiago Spring Fling. Jenna Kelly hit a two-run home run in the 10th inning to win the game for Saugus. She was 2-for-5 with a double. Teammate Ashley Butera was 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Earlier on Saturday, Saugus lost to Carson, 8-6, in the Santiago Spring Fling. Christin Clark hit a home run and drove in three runs for Saugus.

The West Ranch softball team had its six-game winning streak snapped in a doubleheader against Rio Mesa. West Ranch tied Rio Mesa, 1-1, in the first game and lost the second game, 8-3.

Michaela Hernandez drove in West Ranch's only run on a sacrifice fly in the first game.

Janelle Lindvall drove in two runs and Kylie Sorenson was 2-for-4 with a double and scored a run for West Ranch in the second game.

The Canyon softball team beat Chatsworth, 3-2, but lost to Kennedy, 3-1, in the Valley Classic.

Haley Bottino hit a two-run double in the seventh inning against Chatsworth to give her team a come-from-behind win.

Taylor Anderson drove in Canyon's only run against Kennedy. She finished with three hits and drove in two runs in the two games.

In golf, Phil Mickelson won his third Masters championship by three strokes over Lee Westwood. Tiger Woods, playing in his first tournament of the year, finished tied for fourth, five shots behind Mickelson.

The Dodgers lost to the Florida Marlins, 6-5, and lost for the fourth time this season. Jorge Cantu gave the Marlins the lead with a two-run double in the seventh inning. He also hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning and finished with five RBIs.

The Dodgers limp home after a 2-4 road trip to start the season. Their home opener is Tuesday against the 4-2 Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Lakers are not playing like the team with the best record in the Western Conference. They lost to the Portland Trail Blazers, 91-88. The Lakers have lost three of their last four games and are 2-5 in their last seven.

There are only two more games left for the Lakers in the regular season, Tuesday at home against the Sacramento Kings and Wednesday against the Clippers.

In hockey, the Kings finished the regular season with a 2-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche. The Kings are the sixth seed in the Western Conference playoffs and open on the road against the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday.
