Brothers Arrested For Felony Insurance Fraud

stolencaroneTwo brothers who had been recently indicted by federal prosecutors on 40 counts of fraud, identity theft and conspiracy were arrested by local California Highway Patrol officers when they attempted to register an off-road vehicle.

Allen and Alfred Avetyan of Sunland brought a custom-built off-road vehicle to the CHP's Newhall office for a VIN inspection prior to registering the vehicle on March 31.

They provided paperwork supporting the newly-constructed vehicle to Officer Bruce Turnn, who found several discrepancies between the vehicle and the documentation.

Turnn discovered that Alfred Avetyan had filed a theft claim with the Los Angeles Police Department for an off-road vehicle earlier this year and was paid $97,000 by Foremost Insurance Company for his loss.

It was discovered that the vehicle allegedly stolen matched the vehicle the pair were attempting to register, except for a custom wrap that changed the appearance of the vehicle. Further investigation confirmed that the vehicle was one and the same as originally reported stolen to LAPD, and Altadena CHP Officer Gomez identified the vehicle as one he had numbered in 2008.

When the brothers returned to the Newhall office to pick up the car, they were taken into custody and booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's station on suspicion of felony insurance fraud, grand theft, perjury and conspiracy.
