West Ranch, Saugus Softball Teams To Play For High Desert Classic Championship

khts_sportsThe West Ranch and Saugus softball teams are headed for a High Desert Classic showdown. The teams will meet in the championship game of the High Desert Classic in Lancaster today.

Saugus is coming off a pair of wins over Village Christian and Highland. Saugus shut out Village Christian, 2-0, on back-to-back solo home runs by Abby Linn and Emi Shimamoto. Kimmie Lockhart pitched a complete game shutout.

Ashley Butera hit two home runs and drove in five runs for Saugus in a 10-2 win over Highland.

West Ranch advanced to the championship game with wins over Victor Valley and Santa Monica.

West Ranch pitcher Amanda Martin shut out Victor Valley, 6-0. Bryanna Del La Torre hit a home run and Haley Hineman drove in three runs for West Ranch.

Hineman drove in three more runs in her team's 4-2 win over Santa Monica.

The Canyon softball team beat Victor Valley, 3-0, but lost to Santa Monica, 3-2, in the High Desert Classic. Danielle Sullivan drove in two runs for Canyon against Victor Valley. Canyon pitcher Leanne Hill threw a one-hitter and struck out seven.

In the game against Santa Monica, Hill knocked in two runs with a single. Canyon wraps up the High Desert Classic against Village Christian today.

In high school baseball, Hart outlasted a stubborn Golden Valley team, 10-9, in the Foothill League opener for both teams.

Hart had a 10-7 lead in the sixth inning when Golden Valley closed the gap to 10-8. Golden Valley scored another run in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run on base, but he was tagged out straying away from the bag and ended the game.

Hart's Kevin Bailey drove in two runs with a single in the sixth inning that proved to be the difference in the game.

In other Foothill League openers, West Ranch scored six runs in the sixth inning in a 9-3 win over Saugus.

Valencia erased an early deficit against Canyon and won 10-4. Canyon scored three runs in the first inning and took a 3-0 lead, and were up 4-3 in the fourth inning, but Valencia rallied back. Adam Tapia and Kyle Eaton each hit three-run home runs for Valencia. Tapia's home run gave his team a 6-4 lead in the fifth inning.

In high school volleyball, the Saugus boys lost to Santa Barbara, 2-0, and finished in a tie for ninth in the Dos Pueblos Tournament at UC Santa Barbara.

Get ready for the surprisingly Sweet 16 in the NCAA men's basketball tournament.

Kansas, the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region and the top-ranked team in the tournament, lost in the second round to Northern Iowa, 69-67. Villanova, the No. 2 team in the South Region, lost to St. Mary's, 75-68. Pittsburgh, the No. 3 team in the West Region, lost to Xavier, 71-68.

The Sweet 16 includes 12th-seeded Cornell and 11th-seeded Washington out of the East Region, 10th-seeded St. Mary's in the South Region and ninth-seeded Northern Iowa in the Midwest Region. Play in the NCAA men's basketball tournament resumes on Thursday. Beware Kentucky, Duke and Syracuse, it looks like upsets are in abundance.

The Lakers had no problem with the visiting Washington Wizards, despite the 99-92 final score. The Lakers were up by 26 points at halftime and Kobe Bryant scored 24 points. Pau Gasol had another strong game with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Shannon Brown scored 13 points off the bench.

The Clippers are back to their losing ways. The Sacramento Kings beat the Clippers, 102-89, behind a career night from Beno Udrih. He dished out 17 assists, a career high, and scored 20 points.

Eric Gordon scored 23 points for the Clippers.

In hockey, the Kings take on the Colorado Avalanche tonight at Staples Center. Pregame starts at 7 on AM 1220, KHTS.
