West Ranch Wins Hart Softball Tournament
The West Ranch softball team gave the rest of the Foothill League a wake-up call by winning the Hart tournament over the weekend.
West Ranch beat Alemany, 7-3, in the championships game at Central Park on Saturday.
Kylie Sorenson knocked in two runs in the second inning and helped West Ranch build a 5-0 lead.
Bryanna De La Torre earned most valuable player honors for the tournament, collecting a hit and five stolen bases in the championship game against Alemany.
Bailey Foster earned the championship game win for West Ranch, scattering three hits over five innings.
The Canyon softball team finished in third place in the Hart tournament after beating Pacifica, 7-5. Amber Evans drove in two runs with a solo home run and a sacrifice fly for Canyon.
The Hart softball team finished in fifth place. Hart's Lauren Anderson hit a solo home run and an RBI single in her team's 4-1 win over Highland.
Valencia went 3-2 in the Tournament of Champions in Arizona over the weekend. In the team's last game of the tournament, an 18-1 win over Woodbridge, Valencia hit four home runs. Caitlin Rooney went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, a home run and a double.
Saugus went 2-2 in the Tournament of Champions and beat Mojave, 12-1, in its last game. Sara Shier had a big game, going 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.
The Vasquez softball team shut out Santa Clarita Christian, 10-0, in a non-league game.
In high school baseball, Saugus crushed Sylmar, 10-1, in the Southern California Invitational. Justin Sheehan had two hits and drove in two runs.
Golden Valley beat Poly of Arleta, 11-6, in the Southern California Invitational. Josh Smith was 2-for-4 with a home run and drove in three runs. Teammate Kamran Young was 1-for-2 and scored three runs.
Hart's James Scott pitched five strong innings and went 2-for-3 at the plate in his team's 8-2 win over Harvard-Westlake in the Easton Tournament. Daniel Dietz drove in two runs for Hart.
In high school volleyball, the Saugus boys finished in third place in the Arcadia Tournament after a 26-24 loss to Arcadia in the semifinals. Ryan Mason earned all-tournament honors for Saugus.
In men's college basketball, Washington won the Pac-10 tournament and was shipped out to the East bracket of the NCAA tournament. Washington earned the 11th seed in the East bracket and will face sixth-seeded Marquette in the first round. California, the runner-ups in the Pac-10 tournament, got the eighth seed South regional. The Golden Bears open against Louisville in the first round.
Kansas got the No. 1 seed in the Midwest regional. Syracuse is the No. 1 team in the West, Kentucky has the top seed in the East and Duke is the No. 1 team in the South. Looks like Ohio State and its Big 10 championship doesn't mean a whole lot to the NCAA tournament committee. Ohio State is the No. 2 team in the Midwest region and plays UC Santa Barbara, the Big West tournament champions, in the first round.
In hockey, the Kings lost to the Nashville Predators, 3-2. Anze Kopitar scored on a power play in the first period and Dustin Brown added a goal in the third period. Nashville scored twice in the third period with Patric Hornqvist burying the game-winner with 3:31 to play.
