Canyon Boys Soccer Team Slips Past La Quinta In CIF Playoffs

sportscanyonThe Canyon boys soccer team beat La Quinta, 1-0, in overtime to advance to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs.

Petar Mladenovic took only one shot in the game, but it proved to be the game winner in the overtime period.

It was the second overtime playoff win for Canyon. The team beat Anaheim, 7-6, on penalty kicks after playing to a 2-2 tie in the first round of the playoffs.

The Canyon boys basketball team saw its playoff run end with a 65-59 loss to Burbank. Coley Apsay scored 18 points for Canyon in his team's Division IIAA quarterfinals loss.

There are no teams from the Foothill League left in the CIF boys basketball playoffs.

Golden Valley lost to Serra, 102-63, in their Division IIIA quarterfinal game. High-scoring Trevor Wiseman was held to 11 points against Serra. Golden Valley teammate Taylor Statham scored nine.

The Saugus boys lost to top-seeded Summit, 76-49, in the quarterfinals of the Division IIAA playoffs.

The Santa Clarita Christian boys basketball team lost to Tarbut V'torah, 67-45, in the quarterfinals of the Division VIAA playoffs Brett Ranhofer scored a team-high 17 points for Santa Clarita Christian.

The Master's College men's basketball team lost, 65-51, to Biola, the No. 6 team in the NAIA. Dean Hadley scored a team-high 16 points for The Master's College.

The Master's College women lost, 73-63, to Biola, the 21st-ranked team in the NAIA. Annie Gillespie scored 19 points and hit three 3-pointers for The Master's College.

The Lakers escaped Memphis with a 99-98 win over the Grizzlies. Kobe Bryant gave the Lakers a one-point lead by hitting a 3-pointer with 4.3 seconds left in the game. Bryant, who missed the past five games with a sprained ankle, made his return by scoring 32 points.

In the Winter Olympics, the United States took the silver medal in the Nordic combined team relay, finishing 5.2 seconds behind Austria. Germany won the bronze.

American skier Bode Miller fell short in his quest to win a fourth medal in the Winter Games, failing to finish in the giant slalom after missing a gate during his run. Miller has won three medals, a gold in super-combined, silver in super-G and bronze in downhill. He can become the first skier to win four medals in Alpine events when he competes in the slalom on Saturday.

The United States has won 26 medals in the Winter Olympics to lead all nations. Germany is second with 23.
