Santa Clarita Teen Killed In Sand Canyon Accident

At 9:20 p.m. Monday night, two teenagers were driving a 2003 Mitsubishi along Sand Canyon Rd. near Santa Clarita, when the 17 year-old driver reportedly lost control of the car.

A CHP report claimed that investigators have not yet determined the speed in which the vehicle was traveling, however the vehicle entered a spin and went off the roadway. The car then fell approximately 160 feet to the bottom of a ravine.

The 17 year-old driver, a Sylmar resident, was airlifted to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center with major injuries.

The 18 year-old passenger, a Saugus resident named Jaime Arias, was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:45 p.m.

Both students reportedly attended Bowman High School. The Hart District will make grief counseling available to students.

CHP officials do not believe that alcohol or drugs were a factor in this accident.
