Canyon Girls Basketball Team Wins Foothill League Championship

The Canyon girls basketball team won its first Foothill League championship in nearly 40 years with a 56-44 win over West Ranch. Adriana Dent scored 11 points and had 13 rebounds to lead Canyon. Amber Evans led Canyon in scoring with 13 points.

The last time a Canyon girls basketball team won a league title was in 1973.

Erin Ruiz did her best to rally West Ranch, scoring 12 of her game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter. West Ranch finished in second place in the Foothill League standings.

The Valencia girls beat Saugus, 59-50, and wrapped up third place in the Foothill League. Jenny Lentz scored 22 points to lead Valencia. Kaylynn Martin had a team-high 21 points for Saugus.

Hart got 14 points from Charlotte Reininger in a 72-32 win over Golden Valley.

On the boys side, Golden Valley and Valencia finished in a tie for first in the Foothill League. Golden Valley cruised to a 76-60 win over Hart. Taylor Statham scored 21 points for Golden Valley.

Valencia rolled over Saugus, 79-59, behind a 26-point effort from Lonnie Jackson. He helped Valencia build a 29-point halftime lead. Brad Buchignani scored 26 points for Saugus.

Canyon beat West Ranch, 68-60, to finish in third place in the Foothill League. Wesley Bartole scored 16 points for Canyon.

In high school soccer, the Canyon boys completed an unbeaten Foothill League season with a 2-0 win over West Ranch. Canyon finished with a 9-0-1 league record and in first place. Mohammed Roknipour and Jordan Markovich each scored a goal for Canyon.

Golden Valley beat Hart, 3-1. Steven Rodriguez and Andy Ruiz each had a goal and an assist for Golden Valley.

The Valencia boys finished in second place in league, followed by Saugus in third place.

The Saugus girls won the Foothill League championship outright with a 2-2 tie against Valencia. Brittanie Sakajian scored the game-tying goal for Saugus.

Hart shut out Golden Valley, 2-0, to finish in second place in league. Valencia finished in third place in league.

The College of the Canyons baseball team won its first game of the season, 4-2, over East L.A. College. Nico Moreno hit a two-run home run and Cal Vogelsang had two hits, including a solo home run, and drove in two runs.

The Kings rallied in the third period, but lost to the Edmonton Oiler, 3-2, in a shootout last night at Staples Center. The Kings scored two goals in the third period to tie the game and had a power play in overtime, but couldn't score.
