COC Ice Hockey Team Wins PCHA Championship

sportslocalThe College of the Canyons ice hockey team won the Pacific Coast Hockey Association championship over the weekend in Lake Tahoe. COC beat Santa Clara University, 13-4, in the semifinals.

In the championship game, COC beat Cal State Northridge, 6-4, for its second straight Adams Cup championship.

COC goalie Mike McGrath was awarded the PCHA goalie of the year.


In college basketball, The Master's College men needed double overtime to beat San Diego Christian, 89-77. Joey Fuca finished with a team-high 23 points and The Master's College outscored San Diego Christian, 17-5 in the second overtime period.

The Master's College women beat San Diego Christian, 81-70, behind a double-double from Brittany Henderson. She scored 17 points and had 11 rebounds. Teammate Jenna Reed scored 20 points to lead The Master's College.

The College of the Canyons men's team lost to Bakersfield College, 82-75. Brennan Bradley scored a team-high 21 points for COC.

The College of the Canyons women beat Bakersfield College, 93-50, and ran their Western State Conference record to an undefeated 8-0. The COC women have won 15 straight games. Five COC players scored in double figures. Kelli Lewis led her team with 21 points. Ashley Mason scored 20 off the bench.

In high school basketball, the Canyon and Valencia boys basketball teams will play tonight in a Foothill League game for first place. Both teams are tied for first. Golden Valley, also in the Foothill League title hunt, is home against West Ranch. The Saugus boys are on the road against Hart.

The Canyon girls are on the road against Valencia. The Saugus girls are at Hart and the West Ranch girls are at Golden Valley.

In high school soccer, the Canyon boys will look to keep their undefeated Foothill League record in tact against Valencia today. The Saugus boys are at Hart and the West Ranch boys are at Golden Valley.

The resurgent Saugus girls are home against Hart. Golden Valley is at West Ranch and Valencia plays at Canyon.

The Lakers, playing without Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bynum, beat the visiting San Antonio Spurs, 101-89. Pau Gasol more than picked up the slack for his injured teammates. He scored 21 points, had 19 rebounds and eight assists. He added five blocked shots to boot.

The Kings saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end in a 4-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks. Corey Perry scored a goal and had two assists for Ducks. Oscar Moller and Anze Kopitar scored for the Kings.
