Locals Open Hearts, Wallets For Haiti Earthquake Victims
Locals seeing the devastation from news coverage of the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that hit Haiti last Tuesday has prompted individuals and businesses to open their hearts and pocketbooks.
Some campaigns are international, such as the one for the Red Cross, where customers can text "haiti" to 90999 to make a $10 donation, while some are hyperlocal, such as the five-hour window at Concerto Salon on Cinema Drive (10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24) where proceeds from services such as haircuts and waxing will be sent to the relief efforts.
To make a donation toward rebuilding the country, go to the Habitat for Humanity website at habitat.org, or click on the clintonbushhaitifund.org to help the former Presidents channel the needed funding.
All Corked Up Wine, with volunteers from our local SCV Vintner's and Grower's Association, will hold a fundraising event on Thursday January 21 from 6-8pm to help the 3 Angels Children's Relief, a nonprofit organization that helps orphaned children in Petionville, Haiti. For a $15 donation, guests can enjoy wine and live music, with all the money going to the orphanage. For information on the charity, go to www.threeangelsrelief.org.
Even the kids can get into the act; at the Build A Bear Workshop in the Westfield Valencia Town Center, customers are routinely asked to donate $1 to charity when they make their purchase. This month, that charity is earthquake relief in Haiti. And Starbucks locations across the valley will be accepting donations to the Red Cross, to which the corporation will add $1 million.
