Canyon Surprises Golden Valley In Boys Basketball Foothill League Opener
The Canyon boys basketball team erased a 13-point deficit and beat Golden Valley, the reigning Foothill League champs, 77-70. Kris Quant hit four 3-pointers in the third quarter to lift Canyon over Golden Valley in the league opener.
Brian Nnaoji and Wesley Bartole each scored 20 points for Canyon. Quant finished with 19 points. Trevor Wiseman had 20 points for Golden Valley in the loss.
The Valencia boys beat Hart, 65-47, behind 24 points from Lonnie Jackson. Cole Preston and Roman Delgado each scored a team-high 19 points for Hart.
The Saugus boys won their league opener, 57-54, over West Ranch. Jeremy Gatewood scored 19 points for Saugus.
The Santa Clarita Christian boys won their Heritage League opener, 72-54, against Faith Baptist. Brett Ranhoffer and Davion Cotterell each scored 24 points for Santa Clarita Christian.
In girls basketball, West Ranch beat Saugus, 53-46. Kaylyn Tarver had 14 points for West Ranch. Canyon beat Golden Valley, 93-16, behind 21 points from Brooke LeMar. Valencia beat Hart, 59-54.
The Santa Clarita Christian girls lost to Faith Baptist, 46-37. Kaitlyn Preheim had team-high 14 points and Carrollan Scott scored 10 points and had eight rebounds for Santa Clarita Christian.
In high school soccer, Canyon's Sipriano Vigil scored two goals in his team's 4-1 win over Golden Valley. The Valencia boys knocked off Hart, 4-1. West Ranch shut out Saugus, 2-0.
The Santa Clarita Christian boys lost to Yeshiva, 4-2.
On the girls side, Saugus, the reigning CIF Southern Section Division II champions, opened Foothill League play with a 2-0 shutout over West Ranch. Shasta Fisher and Jamie Molacek each had a goal for Saugus.
Hart beat Valencia, 4-1, and Canyon beat Golden Valley, 3-1.
The Santa Clarita Christian girls shut out Buckely, 4-0. Jennifer Fullarton scored two goals for Santa Clarita Christian.
The Lakers lost to the San Antonio Spurs, 105-85, and Kobe Bryant sat out the fourth quarter with back spasms. He said he would play tonight against the Dallas Mavericks as the Lakers try to snap out of a little funk. The Lakers have lost three of their last four games.
The Clippers survived an evacuation in Memphis, but lost to the Grizzlies, 104-102, and saw their four-game winning streak come to an end. The game was delayed 30 minutes when the FedEx Forum in Memphis was evacuated for a water main break. Baron Davis recorded a triple-double with 27 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists.
In college football, USC has a new coach and his name is Lane Kiffin. One day after Pete Carroll left USC for the NFL and the Seattle Seahawks, USC athletic director Mike Garrett announced that Kiffin will take over as head coach of the Trojans. Kiffin was an offensive coordinator at USC under Carroll. Kiffin coached the Oakland Raiders before heading to the University of Tennessee, where he was 7-6 in his only season with the Volunteers.
