Hart Girls Soccer Team Loses In Buena Tournament Final
The Hart girls soccer team lost to Buena, 4-1, in the championship game of the Buena Tournament. It was the first loss of the season for Hart and a familiar ending for the team in the Buena Tournament. Hart lost in the championship game to Saugus last year.
Katie Trevino scored a goal in the second half, but Daisy Cordona scored two goals for Buena to seal the victory and the championship.
The Saugus girls won the third-place game, 9-8 on penalty kicks against Canyon. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie in regulation. Nicole Penick gave Saugus an early 1-0 lead, scoring in the fourth minute. Malaya Cabrera tied the game in the 30th minute for Canyon, scoring on a header off a corner kick.
Jill Allen knocked in the game-winning goal for Saugus after four rounds of penalty kicks.
The Valencia girls soccer team beat Thousand Oaks, 3-2, and won the consolation championship of the Buena Tournament. It was the fourth straight win for Valencia. Taylor Harrison, Hannah Hicks and Nicolette Smith scored for Valencia.
In high school basketball, the Saugus boys blew out Santa Barbara, 70-30. Jon Grisanti scored 14 points and had eight rebounds for Saugus.
Brock Vereen, a defensive back and wide receiver at Valencia High School, will play at the University of Minnesota next season, according to a report in the Daily News.
Vereen is the younger brother of Shane Vereen, a sophomore running back at Cal.
Brock Vereen had eight interceptions and caught 24 passes for 529 yards with eight touchdowns in his senior season at Valencia.
In semi-pro football, the Santa Clarita Skyhawks won an exhibition game, 20-12, against the Beach City All-Americans at Canyon High School. Running back Sean MacNeil scored two touchdowns for the Skyhawks.
