Valencia Football Team Squeaks Its Way Into Second Round Of CIF Playoffs

sportslocalThe Valencia football team is lucky to be alive in the CIF Southern Section Northern Division playoffs.

Hart and Canyon had no such luck in the first round of the playoffs.


Valencia's Zack Tartabull intercepted a 2-point conversion pass and preserved a 28-27 win over Thousand Oaks to advance to the second round.

Hart lost, 23-15, to an upstart Hueneme team. Hart quarterback C.J. Reyes threw for 193 yards and two touchdowns. But Hueneme running back Trashaun Nixon scored two touchdowns, one on a 65-yard run in the third quarter.

Canyon got steamrolled by Moorpark, 30-0. Canyon quarterback Jonathan Jerozal threw for 161 yards, but the offense sputtered most of the game.

The Santa Clarita Christian football team took another step toward repeating as CIF Southern Section 8-man Division I champions. Santa Clarita Christian scored 34 points in the first quarter and beat Hesperia Christian, 66-21, in a game that was called because of a mercy rule.

Colin Keoshian scored four touchdowns and rushed for 230 yards. He also completed three passes for 48 yards and a touchdown.

In high school cross country, the Saugus girls team, led by junior Kaylin Mahoney, won the CIF Southern Section Division II championship at Mt. San Antonio College. Mahoney won the Division II individual championship for the second year in a row.

In college football, the College of the Canyons lost to Saddleback College, 31-20, in the Western State Bowl. COC finished the season with a 6-5 record.
