Antonovich Grants Money To Historic Trail
In an effort to improve recreational trails in his district, Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich granted $2 million to 15 trails from the Safe Neighborhood Parks Propositions.
The trails are located between Claremont and reach into Lancaster and include Santa Clarita's very own East Walker Ranch trail.
Each trail will receive grant funds of up to $150,000 through funds from voter approved propositions.
The East Walker Ranch trial is in Placerita Canyon and is named after Frank Walker, an early pioneer who raised his family in the canyon.
Walker built the area's first home in the canyon, which is a local historical landmark. Foundation and columns from the home can still be seen from Placerita Canyon Road.
The property where the family lived was also a common film location for cowboy actor William S. Hart, who shot a number of his movies at the ranch. According to SCVhistory.com, the ranch was rented out for $5 a day, and the first film was shot there in 1928.
The City of Santa Clarita recently purchased 140 acres of open space east of the 14 freeway near the Placerita Canyon Nature Center, which includes the East Walker Ranch trail.
The acquisition of the land is part of the City's efforts to develop a band of greenspace that surrounds the city to protect it from encroaching developments.
