Canyon Football Team's Mistakes Costly In Loss To Buena

sportscanyonCANYON COUNTRY - For one quarter, the Canyon High football team matched Buena snap for snap, play for play. But in the end, Buena's passing attack was too much for Canyon in a 34-12 loss at Canyon High School on Friday night.

Canyon had a short-lived 6-3 lead in the first quarter. Josh Telles scored on a 2-yard run with 12 seconds left in the first quarter. Just when things were looking up for Canyon, silly mistakes cost them precious points. A high snap led to a missed extra-point attempt. It was one of a number of mistakes Canyon made throughout the game.

The opening drive for Canyon ended with an interception. The Canyon defense held Buena to a 31-yard field goal, but the interception ended an otherwise successful opening drive for Canyon.

Canyon sophomore quarterback Jonathan Jerozal threw two interceptions and lost a fumble after getting blindsided and sacked in the fourth quarter.

Canyon scored two touchdowns, but both point-after tries failed because of high snaps. A punt in the second quarter also was botched because of a low snap. Little mistakes were costly for Canyon, which dropped to 0-5.

After taking a 6-3 lead, Canyon gave up three unanswered touchdowns and was down 24-6 at halftime. Buena running back Kendrick Mathis scored his first of two touchdowns on a 1-yard run midway through the second quarter. He finished the game with 66 yards on 16 carries.

Wide receiver Chase Smith caught two touchdown passes in the second quarter. The first came on a 48-yard bomb. The second was on a 20-yard quick out with under a minute to play in the half. Smith caught six passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

Buena quarterback Robert Munoz completed 17 of 25 passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns.

Buena opened the second half marching down the field and scoring on a 42-yard field goal by Drew Jacobs. It was his second field goal of the game.

Canyon cut the lead to 27-12 on a 1-yard touchdown on a quarterback sneak by Jerozal in the third quarter.

Vinny Rodriguez and Trent Hernandez shared duties running the ball for Canyon. Both were effective at times. Hernandez led the way with 13 carries for 77 yards. Rodriguez added 27 yards on 10 carries. But turnovers and penalties stalled some of Canyon's more productive drives.

Jerozal threw for 141 yards and completed 13 of 19 passes. He hit Shane Habberstad five times for 62 yards. Drew Wolitarsky caught four passes for 28 yards for Canyon.

Buena (4-1) scored the last touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter. Mathis capped the night with a 2-yard plunge with 5:30 left in the game.

In other games, West Ranch lost to Los Osos, 47-7, and Saugus lost to Crespi, 50-0.

Valencia plays Loyola tonight at L.A. Valley College.
