New Scam Has Email Users On Alert

khts_technewsIllicit email solicits password confirmation

An email went out this week to "undisclosed recipients" informing them that their email servers would be undergoing "vital maintenance" which might interfere with their ability to log in.

To prevent this, recipients were encouraged to reply and confirm their email address and password as a "security measure." They were warned that "failure to do this might cause a permanent deactivation of your Webmail/Email account from our database."

On the KHTS Total Financial Solutions Hour, Jim Shafor said the scam has already had an impact.

"Microsoft confirmed on Monday that their Hotmail site had been the target of a huge scam which tricked a lot of users into revealing their passwords. They're estimating 10,000 plus passwords being posted online," said Shafor.

Email users are encouraged to disregard any solicitation of personal information.
