Suspect Arrested In Teen Stabbing Incident
Gang members suspected of attack in Newhall.
A 16 year-old is recovering from minor wounds after an evening assault in Newhall. The young man was reportedly walking along Newhall Avenue near 15th Street at about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday night when he was approached by two men who challenged and threatened him. According to Sgt. Darren Harris, of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the men are also believed to have shouted gang-related terms.
A physical altercation followed, during which one suspect allegedly brandished a knife and attempted to stab the victim. The teen was able to deflect most of the thrusts; however he did receive some minor scrapes on his neck.
At some point, the victim was able to free himself and run to the safety of the Boys and Girls Club where deputies from the Santa Clarita station were called.
A responding deputy was able to locate two suspects nearby who matched the provided description, however they fled on foot. A containment of the area was quickly established, and local residents provided eyewitness accounts which led to the location of one suspect, 19 year-old Newhall resident Gildardo Villareal. He was reportedly found with blood on his shirt; although it has not yet been determined whether or not the blood matches the victim's.
Villareal was arrested and booked on suspicion of felony attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. Participation in a criminal street gang and the evasion of deputies could bring additional charges. He is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.
The second suspect is still at large.
"We suggest he come forward," Sgt. Harris said. "Because it's only a matter of time before we identify him and track him down."
The second suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 5'5" in height and weighing approximately 150 pounds.
