Hart Football Team Loses To Westlake, 48-21
VALENCIA - The Westlake High School football team came into Foothill League territory for the second week in a row. And for the second game in a row, the Westlake football team left victorious.
Hart lost to Westlake, 48-21, at College of the Canyons on Friday night. Westlake beat Saugus, 42-20, in similar fashion the previous week, putting together a string a scoring drives in the second and third quarters to build a huge lead.
But unlike the Saugus game, Hart (2-2) made costly mistakes in the first half that led to a 31-7 halftime lead for Westlake (3-0).
Hart committed four turnovers in the first half. The first pass by Hart quarterback C.J. Reyes was an interception. Hart lost two fumbles, both resulting in Westlake touchdowns. Reyes threw another interception in the second quarter and finished with only 47 passing yards in the first half.
Westlake, the fourth-ranked team in the CIF Southern Section Northern Division, scored four touchdowns in the second and third quarter and had a 31-point lead with just under a minute to play in the third quarter.
Westlake's opening drive ended with a 26-yard touchdown pass from Nick Isham to Nelson Spruce. Kicker Alex Ball gave Westlake a 10-0 lead with a 21-yard field goal with a 1:43 to play in the first quarter.
But Hart, the No. 10 team in the CIF Southern Section Northern Division poll, rallied in the second quarter to cut Westlake's lead to three points. Reyes scored on a 1-yard run to make it 10-7. But that was as close as Hart would get to Westlake.
Westlake scored four unanswered touchdowns starting with another long scoring catch by Spruce. This time he caught a 31-yard pass from back-up quarterback Michael Bercovici. Isham scored the next two touchdowns, the first on a 1-yard sneak and the other a scrambling 19-yard run just before halftime.
Westlake running back Tavior Mowry scored his only touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run early in the third quarter to give Westlake a 38-7 lead. Mowry rushed for 144 yards on 19 carries.
Hart finally got back on the scoreboard on a 24-yard touchdown reception by Ty MacArthur just before the end of the third quarter. MacArthur had four catches for 54 yards.
Reyes came alive in the second half. After throwing two interceptions and making a sloppy pitch to running back Jake Stephens that led to a fumble, Reyes threw two touchdowns in the second half. He threw for 129 yards in the second half and finished the game with 176 yards passing, two touchdowns and three interceptions.
With Westlake leading 41-14 and trying to run out the clock, Dallas Clayton scored on a 20-yard run to push the lead to 48-14.
Hart scored the final touchdown of the game on a 19-yard pass from Reyes to Blake Borlund at the end of the fourth quarter.
Stephens was the leading rusher in the game. He had 162 yards on 21 carries. His biggest rush of the night came on a 46-yarder.
Hart wide receiver Da'Jon Hairston caught five passes for 78 yards. Reyes and Hairston hooked up four times in the second half and set up the touchdown drives capped by MacArtur and Borlund.
In other games, Valencia beat Palmdale, 35-14; West Ranch beat Beverly Hills, 36-17; Saugus lost to Newbury Park, 41-21; and Canyon lost to Thousand Oaks, 48-21.
