LA County Sheriff - SHARE Program

SHARE_header

While many believe that racism in America is a thing of the past, violence in schools and in the workplace continually cause immeasurable harm. In Los Angeles County alone, about 300 hate crimes are reported annually. To combat these intolerable acts, the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department created the S.H.A.R.E. Tolerance Program.

Traveling to various schools in LA County, the program encompasses tolerance lesson plans and analysis geared towards promoting discussion among teens. Through these discussions, deputies hope to:

  • change attitudes for the future
  • debunk the stereotypes of the past
  • enhance the quality of life

As part of the program, up to 24 students are situated in a mobile theatre to watch a 35 minute documentary about hate crimes and racism today. Then trained deputies help facilitate a 60 to 90 minute conversation about the issues described in the film. In the short time the program has been implemented, the Los Angeles Sheriff Department has seen tremendous results.
