Valencia Football Team Easily Handles Birmingham, 56-31

news_sportsValencia quarterback Alex Bishop threw for five touchdowns and rushed for a sixth in his team's 56-31 win over Birmingham.

Valencia, the No. 3 team in the CIF Southern Section Northern Division poll, jumped out to a 49-7 halftime lead. Brock Vereen caught three passes for 73 yards and two touchdowns for Valencia (2-0).


In other games, the fourth-ranked Saugus football team was stunned by visiting Westlake, the No. 5 team in the CIF Southern Section Northern Division poll, 42-20, last night at College of the Canyons.

Saugus quarterback Zack Gauthier rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns, but Westlake rattled off 28 unanswered points midway through the game and easily handled the reigning Foothill League champs.

Hart quarterback C.J. Reyes had three touchdown passes in a 27-13 win over Righetti.

West Ranch won its second game in a row, 23-14, over Eastside.

Canyon stumbled again, losing 29-24 to Highland. Quarterback Jonathan Jerozal threw two touchdowns, both to Drew Wolitarsky, for Canyon, 0-2 to start the season.

Golden Valley got on the scoreboard, but lost to Santa Paula, 23-13. Quarterback Andrew Avila rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns for Golden Valley.

Santa Clarita Christian, the No. 1 ranked team in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 8-man poll, is on the road tonight to face Joshua Springs.
