Air Quality Still Keeping Kids Inside
Updated 12:20 p.m.
Hart District officials are continuing to keep a close eye on air quality in the Santa Clarita Valley, with the Station Fire still burning nearby.
PE classes continue to be held indoors, with no strenuous activity allowed.
After school practices have also been canceled throughout the district, unless they take place in a sealed facility with re-circulated air.
A decision is still pending as to whether football games scheduled for Thursday and Friday evening will take place, although each school is being asked to come up with an alternate plan in the event that the air quality is still poor in valley on Friday.
Numerous City of Santa Clarita Recreation facilities will also remain closed today due to air quality issues resulting from current Southern California Fires. City-organized Youth Sports programs are also cancelled today due to smoky conditions.
The City's Sports Complex Skate Park and Aquatic Center remain closed today and all City-organized Youth Sports programs and practices are cancelled today at Canyon Country Park, Valencia Meadows Park, and Valencia Heritage Park. Other youth group reservations also remain cancelled at Santa Clarita Park, Bouquet Canyon Park, Newhall Park, and Old Orchard Park. Though classes remain cancelled, the City's Sports Complex Activities Center and registration desk are open.
"Due to air quality issues as reported by the AQMD, many of the City of Santa Clarita's Recreation facilities will remain closed today to prevent health hazards," said Mayor Frank Ferry. "Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid vigorous indoor and outdoor activity."
Central Park, which is currently being utilized as a staging area for emergency fire operations, remains closed to the public, as well. All recreation activity at the location is also cancelled until further notice.
