Santa Clarita Skatepark Hosts Volcom Skate Contest

khts_inthecommunityVolcom is giving skaters a chance to show their stuff at their home turf.

For many local skateboarders the newly opened Santa Clarita Skatepark is a place to show off their new flip-tricks and grabs, but now the park is giving them an opportunity to win money for those same tricks.

The Santa Clarita Skatepark is set to host the last stop of the Volcom Stone's Wild in the Parks skate contest.

Volcom is sponsoring the contest, which has hit local skateparks throughout the country, to give back to amateur skaters.

The contest will feature three divisions of competition: 14 and under, 15 and over and Pro-am.

It will take place on September 19 in three sections of the park.  Skaters will compete in a "Jam Session" format, which is where skaters continuously skate for a set amount of time and are judged on their best run in the time allotment.

In addition to the contest there will also be a free BBQ.

The top 7 skaters from the 14 and under class and the 15 and up divisions will go home with prizes, while the Pro-Am division winners will receive prizes and a cash purse.

All 7 winners will receive invitations to the Wild in the Parks Championships in Phoenix, Arizona on Saturday, Sept 26 for the chance to compete for a $20,000 cash purse.

Entrance into the contest is free but participants are required to wear a helmet, knee and elbow pads.

Spots in the contest are limited and skaters are urged to pre-register on September 9 at volcom.com.  Registration will also be available on the day of the event from 10-11 a.m., permitting additional spots are open.  Skaters under 18 who are registering on the day of the contest must be registered by a parent or guardian.

Skaters who pre-register and register online are required to attend registration on the day of the event to complete Volcom's registration process and the required City waiver.

Volcom chose to host the contest at the Santa Clarita Skatepark because of it's size, state-of-the-art design and professional level features.

The 40,000 square foot park features 10 and 11-foot bowls, a half pipe, flow course, grind ledges, rails, and skate-able planters, which were designed by professionals and local skaters.
