NASCAR Hand-picks Santa Clarita Writer For Race Coverage

alt

NASCAR officials have come up with a creative way to supplement deteriorating print coverage of their sport - turn to the bloggers.

With newspaper staffs thinning out, the ranks of the NASCAR press syndicate have shrunk drastically, leading to less unique coverage of the sport. According to an article on AdAge.com, even NASCAR hotspots like Atlanta have seen papers release their race-related writers.

Looking to drum up coverage, NASCAR began searching the web for the folks that were writing about the sport and came up with a list of nearly 30,000 sites, which was broken down to 28 select bloggers.

Of the 28, one blogger is a local Santa Clarita resident. Haddock In The Paddock, written by KHTS AM-1220 sports writer and former LA Daily News NASCAR blogger Tim Haddock, will now receive media credentials directly from NASCAR to cover the races.

"There are established members of the media who have moved over into the internet realm to cover the sport," Haddock said. "And that's where NASCAR realized that there are a growing number of traditional media members that are making that transition, and they wanted to let them have access to their races, drivers and teams, to cover the sport in the new internet age."

The new venture aims to shore up the nationwide coverage by allowing the hand-picked writers the ability to cover the sport in a renewed capacity.

You can read Tim Haddock's NASCAR coverage on hometownstation.com and Haddock In The Paddock.

On Haddock In The Paddock, the coverage centers around all auto racing and motor sports that are relevant to southern California.

For KHTS AM-1220, Haddock specifically focuses his coverage on drivers and teams from the Santa Clarita Valley.
