Council Can Install Arts Commission Tuesday

news_politicsThe City of Santa Clarita may have an official Arts Commission Tuesday night, if the City Council votes in favor of formation.

The road to Tuesday's vote wound through some challenges at the June 23rd meeting, when Council members Bob Kellar and Marsha McLean locked horns with Mayor Frank Ferry and Council members Laurie Ender and Laurene Weste.

The disagreement was rooted in the size of the Committee, which McLean and Kellar felt should be nine members. Mayor Ferry led an ultimately successful push to set the member total to five, mirroring the Planning and Parks commissions.

A $133.00 per-meeting stipend was also approved for the new commission members, who will meet the third Thursday of every month with the purpose of expanding the opportunities for art events and education across the city of Santa Clarita. If passed, the ordinance will require the Arts Commission members to be residents of the city.

KHTS will report on the results of this vote live from City Hall tonight, with the news posted to hometownstation.com.
