Barricaded Suspect In Canyon Country Now In Custody
UPDATED 2:47 p.m. Monday - Sheriff’s deputies surrounded an apartment in the 18000 block of Deana Lane (near Sandy and Jakes Way off Sierra Highway) due to a barricaded suspect in the area.
Sgt. Derrick Valentine said that the suspect was arrested without incident shortly after noon, despite the six-hour containment that involved personnel from both the local station and Sheriff's Headquarter Bureau.
Joshua Baker, 26, was arrested and taken to Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station for booking. He told deputies that he had been sleeping and did not hear deputies trying to get him to come outside.
According to Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore, precautionary evacuations were done of the surrounding apartments.
The situation began at 6 a.m. when a strongarm robbery occurred in the complex. Two male white adults took property from a female white adult using force, but no weapon. The victim called deputies and one suspect, Daren Knutson, 39, was arrested, but Baker barricaded himself inside the apartment, causing the containment. It is not known whether Baker had a weapon in the apartment.
Knutson's bail was set at $50,000. Both men are scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
