McKeon Named Best Legislator By Builders

buckmckeonEarlier today, Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) presented U.S. Congressman Howard P. "Buck" McKeon with its Free Enterprise Legislator of the Year award.  Each year, during ABC's Legislative Conference, it honors a member of Congress whose public service parallels the ideals upon which ABC was founded: the principles of full and open competition and the advancement of the free-market system.

"Receiving this award is truly a great honor.  I, too, have been a businessman and know how important it is for business owners to run their companies without overregulation and additional bureaucratic layers, said McKeon.  "I also understand the importance of finding good employees, training them, and keeping them.

"That's why I have strongly advocated for open competition and a healthy free enterprise system.  It's also one of the reasons I oppose the so-called Employee Free Choice Act, which strips workers of the right to a secret ballot when deciding on whether or not to unionize.  I appreciate all the work the members of ABC have done to get the word out against this 'card check' legislation and recognize we are making an impact together.  Thank you again - to ABC - for this award."

In 2008, McKeon was Ranking Member on the House Committee on Education and Labor, the panel that oversees many issues important to ABC members.  In addition, he cosponsored both the Secret Ballot Protection Act of 2009 (H.R. 1176), which would ensure workers the right to a secret-ballot election when deciding whether to unionize, and the Green Jobs Improvement Act of 2009 (H.R. 2026), which would make nonunion training programs eligible for federal funding under the Green Jobs program.

"Congressman McKeon is a great friend of ABC, the merit shop construction industry and a strong ally in Congress," said Jerry Gorski, 2009 ABC national chairman and president of Gorski Engineering, Collegeville, Pa. "He has been on the frontline on issues that help advance free enterprise, and for that we are grateful."

Associated Builders and Contractors is a national association with 79 chapters representing 25,000 merit shop construction and construction-related firms with 2 million employees.
