McKeon Hopes For Armed Services Rank

Congressman Buck McKeon is throwing his hat into the ring to be the next highest-ranking Republican on the House Armed Services Committee.

With President Obama’s nomination of Rep. John McHugh of New York for Army Secretary leaving the top GOP spot open, McKeon and two other partymates are jockeying for position to rise to the top. In the running with McKeon are Representatives Roscoe Bartlett of Maryland and Mac Thornberry of Texas.

McKeon is currently the highest ranking Republican on the Education and Workforce Committee, a position he would have to give up if he moved over to the Armed Services post.

“After 14 years on the House Armed Services Committee and three years as the leading Republican on the Education & Labor Committee, I’ve decided to submit my name for the House Armed Services ranking member position" he said. "The coming years are poised for tough challenges for our men and women in uniform and I stand ready to lead as a strong voice for Republicans. I’m looking forward to discussing my bid in the coming days with my fellow Republican colleagues.”

Elected to Congress in 1992, McKeon has been a member of the Armed Services Committee for several sessions. He also serves on the Republican Study Committee, the Republican New Media Caucus and the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Caucus.
