Historical Chuckwagons To Roll Out Thursday
A feast for the Western senses and two fundraisers to help preserve Santa Clarita’s heritage will be held Thursday night at Heritage Junction Historic Park. The fourth annual Chuckwagon Dinner Show features authentic wagons, cooking demonstrations and a delicious meal much like the ones cowboys enjoyed on the trails.
The show is a partner event of the Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival and since its inception, has been somewhat of a kickoff event, getting everyone in the Western frame of mind.
Throughout the evening, there will be music and entertainment, featuring storyteller Joe Herrington and musician Gene Calkin, with headliner Sourdough Slim bringing his “supersonic” yodeling and accordion stylings to the stage along with some good Western tunes.
In addition, a small posse of Santa Clarita Master Chorale members will sing samplings from their upcoming concert “How The West Was Sung.”
Chuckwagon cooks returning to the event are from Manflo Ranch and 2R Ranch, fresh from recent wins at the Festival of the West in areas of both cooking and presentation.
On the menu are beef tips with gravy, cowboy beans, mashed potatoes, green salad, biscuits with butter, a dutch oven dessert and cowboy coffee.
Funds raised will benefit programs and restoration projects of the SCV Historical Society. The Society’s gift shop will be open and docents will be on hand to answer questions and recruit new members.
The chuckwagon event will be held in front of the Saugus Train Station in Heritage Junction. Tickets are $40 per person and gates open at 6 p.m.
Immediately before the chuckwagon show, there will be a tequila tasting sponsored by Patron Tequila. Tickets are $20 per person (21 and over only) and the tasting will be held in the circa 1890s Pardee House near the entrance to Heritage Junction. This is a separately-ticketed event, with funds going to support restoration projects within the Pardee House.
