Charities Dance Away With Thousands In New Event
Winners from the first-ever “Dancing With Our Stars” competition to raise money for various Santa Clarita valley charities brought in thousands of dollars for the dancers' favorite causes.
A Who’s Who of Santa Clarita movers and shakers (literally) partnered with professional dancers and performed salsas, waltzes and rhumbas to the delight of the sold-out crowd in the ballroom at the Valencia Hyatt Regency.
Coming out the winner was Moe Hafizi and his partner Sheyla Cintron, a former Broadway dancer. Cintron now works as an instructor at Pilates Teck in Newhall. They were salsaing for the SCV Senior Center.
In second place was Bob Hudson and his partner, Trisha Teagle, a singer/dancer who danced on cruise ships and in musical theater. They waltzed away with a sizeable donation to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.
And in third place, Jacquie Petersen waltzed in the arms of another local celebrity, Tony Newhall, who learned his craft at Arthur Murray and taught at his wife Reena’s dance studios as well as on cruise ships and discos through the years.
KHTS' own Janice Murray also took part in the event, dancing for her selected charity.
Preliminary estimates are that $70,000 was raised for charity with the Saturday night event.
