Egg Rolls, More Spices Added To Product Recall

The recall of spices from Union International Food Company has widened to include pepper products sold under the “Lian How” and “Uncle Chen” labels as well as more than 50 sauces and oils produced at the Union City plant contaminated with salmonella.

In addition, the California Department of Public Health has warned consumers not to eat chicken and vegetable egg rolls from EDS Wrap and Roll Foods because they may have been prepared with pepper from the plant and have been voluntarily recalled. The egg rolls were sold primarily to restaurants and markets in California and Arizona under the EDS Wrap and Roll Foods and Tien Tien brands.

Pepper products from the Union International facility have been associated with an outbreak of salmonella that has sickened 57 people in four states, including 42 in California. No deaths have been reported. The illnesses among California residents have occurred in 17 counties in Central and Northern California and the latest onset of disease was April 6.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly individuals and others with weakened immune systems. Health individuals infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and produce more severe illnesses. Consumers should consult with their physicians if they have these symptoms.
