City's Road Project Wish List

When it comes to our local roads, just about everyone has a few pet projects they hope the City would tackle. After diagnosing the most important improvements, the city has compiled a "wish list" of sorts, which details several roadway projects that they hope to receive some Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) funding for.

Up to 88 cities will be vying for Metro funding in this session, with the payments beginning in 2011.

However, even despite the competitive nature of the bidding, the City has prepared a proposal for over $54 million dollars in grants for their wish list.

Here's what they're asking for, and how much the city can match:

  • Canyon Country Regional Transit Center - Requesting $32 million with a city match of $8 million.
  • Replacement of busses with compressed natural gas - Requesting $2.6 million with a city match of $1.2 million.
  • Intelligent Transportation Management System (ITMS) Phase 4, Interconnect Gap Closure and Signal Synchronization - Requesting $2.8 million with a city match of $700,000.
  • McBean Parkway Bridge widening over the Santa Clara River - Requesting $5.2 million with a city match of $2.8 million.
  • Golden Valley Road Bridge widening over State route 14 - Requesting $4 million with a city match of $4 million.
  • Class I bike path added to Railroad Avenue - Requesting $3.2 million with a city match of $800,000.
  • Avenue Scott sidewalk gap closure - Requesting $1.8 million with a city match of $470,000.
  • Citywide wayfinding program for pedestrians and bicyclists - Requesting $320,000 with a city match of $80,000.
  • Main Street/Newhall Avenue roundabout - Requesting $980,000 with a city match of $420,000.
  • Interstate 5/Lyons avenue gateway beautification - Requesting $1.6 million with a city match of $200,000 and a Los Angeles County match of $200,000.

The Metro application deadline for funding is April 24th, and MTA staff will spend May and June ranking the projects. In September, the Metro board will decide which projects get funded.
