In honor of the Week of the Young Child, College of the Canyons and the Southern California Valley Association for the Education of Young Children (SCVAEYC) will host the seventh annual ‘Play Day,' offering free, developmentally appropriate, activities for children in the Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys.

Established in 1971 by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the world's largest early childhood education association, the Week of the Young Child brings to attention to the needs of young children and their families, while highlighting the early childhood education programs and services available to meet those needs.

"The Play Day provides quality play experiences for children while bringing our community together," said Wendy Ruiz, director of Infant/Toddler programs at the college's Center for Early Childhood Education and chair of the Santa Clarita SCVAEYC.

Presented by the SCVAEYC and co-sponsored by College of the Canyons, ‘Play Day' will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 17, in the college's Honor Grove, located on the Valencia campus.

‘Play Day' will serve as part of the college's ongoing 40th Anniversary celebration. In fact, the now annual Play Day event was first held in conjunction with the college's 20th Anniversary celebration in 1989-90.

"This event is the perfect opportunity for families to spend quality time with their children while discovering, and learning about, the many valuable resources this community has to offer," said Ruiz.

Parents are welcome to bring a picnic lunch and participate in the day's lineup of activities including arts and crafts, music, storytelling, obstacle courses and math and science activities. Free water bottles will also be available throughout the day.
