Assemblyman Scott Wilk On Health, Education, Business, Arts Committees

Local Assemblyman Scott Wilk wasted no time in signing up for a host of committees in the state Legislature.

Wilk was named vice chair of the Assembly Committee on Rules on Dec. 3 by Speaker John Perez. Wilk, a longtime Santa Clarita resident  and former trustee for College of the Canyons also will be serving on several other committees after Thursday’s appointments were named.

Wilk also was named to Health, Higher Education, Business and Professions and Arts and Entertainment committees, all of which were requested by the assemblyman.

“The Arts and Entertainment Committee was an easy one for me to advocate for, because here in the Santa Clarita Valley, 7 percent of our workforce works directly in the entertainment industry,” Wilk said Thursday. “And I think its been well-documented that California has been struggling to keep Hollywood in Hollywood.”

Wilk said that as someone who’s served as a trustee for Henry Mayo hospital, the Committee on Health made sense.

The committee’s primary jurisdictions are health care, health insurance, mental health, MediCal and other public health care programs. The Committee also oversees licensing of health professionals and long term health care facilities.

The Committee on Business and Profession oversees consumer protection, occupational licensing, and the creation and elimination of regulatory agencies.

The Committee on Higher Education’s primary jurisdictions are the university, state university and community college systems and student financial aid.

The Committee on Arts and Entertainment’s main jurisdictions are the programs and policies affecting the recording and motion picture industries. The Committee also oversees tourism, art programs and museums, and the State Athletic Commission.

The Assembly Rules Committee acts as the executive committee of the lower house. One of its most important functions is to refer all bills and resolutions to the appropriate standing committee.
